Don Drone, retired Director of Wellington Catholic District School Board pictured with Greg Meredith and Dan Schneider, longtime Interpreters at the Guelph Lake Interpretation Centre.
Late last year, Grand River Conservation Foundation received a $100,000 pledge commitment to the new Centre from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, but who challenged them to identify an individual who has played an outstanding leadership role in supporting programs at the Centre. Sara Wilbur, Executive Director, noted that they immediately thought of Don Drone.
Don has been a vital supporter of the GRCA’s outdoor education program at Guelph Lake since its beginnings in 1982. His roles have included the development of the curriculum around these programs and the creation of educational kits that were distributed to schools in advance of their visits to Guelph Lake. In the early 1990’s Don worked with Nature Centre staff to start a summer school enrichment program at Guelph Lake. This program eventually evolved into the summer camp model that still exists today. His direct oversight of the partnership between the Nature Centre and the Wellington Catholic District School Board lasted for a decade. Don championed the program at the WCDSB and made outdoor education a priority, ensuring that thousands of young people have opportunities in nature.
In recognition of his longtime and consistent support of outdoor education at the Guelph Lake Nature Centre, a classroom at the new Centre will be dedicated in Don’s name. Congratulations Don...a powerful legacy of the importance of stewardship of creation for our students!
