The Wellington Catholic District School Board Regional Skills Competition is expanding. This year’s competition is the biggest yet, with all 18 district elementary schools and a total of 375 students competing in design challenge events such as: Lego Robotics and Mechanics, TV/Video Production, Health and Safety, Design and Build, Construction and Green Energy.

The annual competition, for students in grades 7 and 8, will take place at the Hanlon Convention Centre on April 5, 2018 from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m.

Having students participate in these activities also exposes them to future careers in science and engineering as well as the trades. “It’s exciting to watch students collaborating and learning from each other as they apply critical thinking skills and problem-solve dynamic challenges”, said Assistant Superintendent of Education, Tim Yawney.

The Annual Skills Canada Regional Competition encourages students to apply Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Skills to solve technical hands on tasks in a friendly competitive forum. “The skills competition is an extension of the experiential learning that happens in all our classrooms. Our students love it because it they get authentic opportunities to apply their learning and try new things in fun and engaging ways”, noted Director of Education, Tamara Nugent.

Winners from the Regional Competition will move on to compete in the Provincial competition in Toronto in May.
