Summer Learning Program Students Pick up Summer Fun Pack Ahead of Summer Term

This past week, students headed back to school to pick up a Summer Fun Pack ahead of the WCDSB Summer Learning Program (SLP).

After a short break from the traditional school year, students were excited to pick up the Summer Fun Packs prepared by the SLP team to assist in making their summer learning experience a positive one. Within the packages were a themed storybook: 'All Are Welcome' for the Primary students and 'The Hero Next Door' for the Junior students, a whiteboard, marker, eraser, notebook, math tools, a Virtual Summer Learning t-shirt, and STEM activities - trades colouring books for Grades 1 and 2, Houses for Grades 3 and 4, and Self-propelled cars for Grades 5 and 6.

Over the summer, just over sixty students from Grades 1-6 will be expanding their knowledge in a variety of offered virtual classes.

“In the Primary/Junior program, we are covering Literacy, Math, and STEM challenges and activities. We have an organization called Fair Chance that will be working with our teachers and students to provide Coding, Minecraft coding, and Micro bits computer technology by way of support of our OYAP leader and superintendent,” shared Luisa Silveri, WCDSB Primary/Junior Summer Learning Program Supervisor. “We have some virtual field trips that are tied into our weekly themes as well, Max the Magnificent play being one.”

To be enrolled in the SLP, students are either encouraged by teachers or electively register. As Silveri explains, SLP provides extra reinforcement and learning support to students.

“Students have an opportunity to learn new, exciting information e.g. Coding, Microbits etc,” she said. “They have an opportunity to meet new students across the board. It is a program that provides learning in fun, enjoyable, innovative, and meaningful contexts that supports the curriculum.”

A total of eight teachers and a Technology Enabled Learning and Teaching Support will join Silveri in delivering the SLP from July 5-23. For more information on WCDSB’S Summer Learning Program please visit our webpage
