What do we believe about attendance?
We are most successful when we attend.
This means we strive to continually develop our learning and listening skills in class which positively impact our achievement and relationships with others. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new about yourself, others and the world around you.
We are challenged us to learn from our mistakes, and to use our strengths effectively to address our weaknesses and to do what is right for ourselves and others. It also requires us to be accountable for our responsibilities such as group work, making up missed work or balancing our school/work/curricular/family circumstances.
Finally, we believe in encouraging each other to see hope and growth in every challenge and to see others’ strengths in every situation. This also means that it is not always easy or free of fear, but by asking questions, seeking guidance or helping others, all of us can learn and succeed with the right amount of time and support.
All students can and will succeed if they:
SHOW UP: Attend classes on time and in uniform, ready to go.
MAKE AN EFFORT: Complete assignments on time and with care.
BE RESPECTFUL: Have a respectful attitude and engage fully.
|
Attendance Expectations:
- We need to be in school every day and on time.
- Parents/Guardians support us when they use Safe Arrivals ahead of time, or at the very least- on the day of their child’s absence, similar to the real-working world.
- We are always individually accountable for missed work due to absence.
- We respectfully attend all assemblies and liturgies as part of our education.
- Parents/Guardians and students over the age of 18 support our school culture when they ensure attendance at all assemblies and liturgies.
- Students achieve success when core learning skills such as time management, organization, balance, extra-help and initiative are practiced- missing one class to complete work for another class does not support these core learning skills.
- Parents/Guardians need to inform the school of illnesses, appointments, family emergency, religious observances or exceptional circumstances (or if the student is over 18 years of age) using Safe Arrivals.
- Students over the age of 18 years of age shall always act responsibility, respectfully and maturely with this privilege of reporting their own attendance.
- Students must be in “good attendance standing” to participate in extra-curricular activities including athletics, arts, leadership, clubs and field trips.
- As part of Safe Schools Regulations, Safe Arrivals will contact the parent/guardian on each day of the student’s absence from the school.
- PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION IS UP-TO-DATE.
- The school has established procedures to follow to support a student who does not attend and no indication has been received from the student’s parents/guardian to support the absence.
- A Board Attendance Counselor shall become available to support a pupil whose success is impacted by accumulated absenteeism or lack of parent/guardian support.
As part of the SafeArrivals program, you are asked to report your child's absence in advance using any of these convenient methods:
- Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store or go to the schoolmessenger.ca. The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

The Wellington Catholic District School Board does not provide any accident insurance for students to cover dental and other injuries that may occur as a result of accidents incurred during school activities. We offer a voluntary student accident insurance program. Parents or guardians pay the cost for the coverage.
In reviewing the recent history of student accidents it is clear that a significant percentage of accidents occurred during a school sponsored athletic event where participation is optional.
Consequently, in an effort to reduce potential financial hardship, the Board now requires that all students participating in a school sponsored extra-curricular athletic activity purchase student accident insurance or have private coverage in effect.
For details regarding the purchase and extent of this coverage, parents and guardians are requested to review the insurance package made available in the main office at the school or purchased directly online at www.insuremykids.com.
- The Board acknowledges that participation in school athletic events are activities that require appropriate instruction and training but are also activities that involve an inherent risk.
- Participation in these activities in voluntary and requires parental consent. The Board does not provide any accident insurance for students to cover dental and other injuries that may occur as a result of accidents incurred during such school activities.
- The Board, recognizing the possible financial hardship to a student’s family, requires that all students participating in a school sponsored extra-curricular athletic activity, either interschool or intramural, purchase Student Accident or have private coverage in effect.
- The Wellington Catholic District School Board, empowered by the Education Act, will annually make available to parents and legal guardians an Accident and Life Insurance Program for student. (P.SMW.G.6)
Parents or guardians are requested to acknowledge that they have read the Board Policy on Student Accident Insurance and understand the mandatory expectations of the School Board regarding student participation in optional extra-curricular athletic events and the need for minimal student accident insurance.

SECONDARY SCHOOL RELIGIOUS EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS LETTER OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
To be completed upon secondary school registration in Wellington Catholic DSB
Thank you for choosing to enroll your son/daughter in one of our Catholic secondary schools. The Wellington Catholic District School Board (the “board”) is committed to providing a quality Catholic education which views human life as an integration of body, mind and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic school graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes, and actions. The Ontario Catholic School Graduate is expected to be: a discerning believer; an effective communicator; a reflective, creative and holistic thinker; a self- directed, responsible, lifelong learner; a collaborative contributor; a caring family member; and, a responsible citizen.
The Board supports freedom of religion and an individual’s right to manifest his/her religious beliefs and observances. The right to freedom of religion, however, is not absolute and religious accommodation in the Board is carried out in the larger context of the Catholic educational system and denominational rights of Catholic schools.
The Board recognizes that any form of discrimination is incompatible with Catholic moral principles and is in violation of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The Board recognizes that the school system gives pre- eminence to the tenets of the Catholic faith, congruent with the protection afforded in the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Constitution Act, 1867 and confirmed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Board and its staff are committed to the elimination of discrimination as outlined in Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy and the Ontario Ministry of Education Policy/Program Memorandum No. 119, in a manner which is consistent with the exercise of the Board’s denominational rights under section 93 of the Constitution Act, 1867 and as recognized in section 19 of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
The historical mandate of the Catholic school system in Ontario is to infuse the entire syllabus, and related activities of the school on the life and teaching of Jesus. As such, the Wellington Catholic District School Board has the expectation that all student admitted to the Catholic system will benefit from these values and teachings and be formed into responsible, reflective and well-rounded citizens.
Our religious expectations and requirements for the duration of a student’s tenure are as follows:
- All students will enroll in a Religious course in each of the four years. All Religion courses are approved by the appropriate Catholic authority. The Government of Ontario recognizes that Religion credits count towards a secondary graduation diploma.
- All students will participate in an annual retreat for the first four years that they are in a secondary school. The retreat normally takes place during the school day at a site off school property. The chaplaincy leader organizes the annual retreat based on spiritual themes appropriate for adolescents.
- All students will participate in the prayer and liturgical life of the school. Catholic students are expected to participate fully as mandated by their sacramental Baptism. Non-Catholic students are expected to participate to the extent that they can. It is not the intention of the Wellington Catholic District School Board to proselytize. However, for supervision, safety and community reasons, the entire school participates in all religious events that occur during the school year. At a minimum, non-Catholic student will attend and maintain respectful silence at all religious observances. All students are encouraged to get involved.
- A Student requesting an accommodation must present written notice from their parent(s)/guardian(s) specifying their accommodation needs relating to religious observances, including holy days on which they will be absent from school. This notice should be made in advance (preferably at the beginning of each school year) to ensure that scheduling of major evaluations, such as tests, assignments or examinations, takes the religious observances into consideration.
- The Catholic District School Boards of Ontario follow approved provincial curriculum. Given the distinctiveness of Catholic schools, the Government of Ontario recognizes parallel curricula for our system. All courses in all subjects areas in our Catholic secondary schools are infused with core Catholic values and teachings. Regardless of the subject matter, the Catholic ethos, and moral value system is reflected throughout the curriculum, and as such, is inextricable from delivery.
- Students are required to adhere to the Appropriate Use of Technology Policy (APP.C.GSA.F.3).
- Student and parent/guardian are required to adhere to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy (P.GSA.F.7)
- Students who are under the age of 18 must have permission from a parent or legal guardian, prior to using the devices in school. This permission is required to be granted annually through the Verification Forms on the Parent Portal.
