From November 6 to 8, students from the Wellington Catholic District School Board participated in the "Hands On For Housing" event hosted by Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington at Elora’s Grand River Raceway. The program brought together students, community organizations, and professionals for a hands-on, skills-based experience centered on affordable housing and community involvement.
Throughout the three-day event, skilled trades students from St. James Catholic High School and Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School constructed backyard structures, which were later auctioned off to support Habitat for Humanity. These projects allowed students to apply practical trade skills while making a tangible impact in the community.Additionally, Grade 12 interior design students from Bishop Macdonell CHS refurbished donated furniture from Habitat ReStore, transforming pieces into inviting lounge spaces for the event. These redesigned items were part of a silent auction, showcasing students' creativity and commitment to sustainable practices.
The event culminated on November 8 with the Hands On For Housing Showcase Celebration, open to the public. The celebration featured a live auction of the student-built backyard structures, a silent auction for upcycled furniture, family-friendly activities, and refreshments. The program highlighted the enthusiasm, skill, and creativity of students as they contributed to Habitat for Humanity’s mission to increase affordable housing in the community.
