Guest Speakers Help to Provide Real World Connections to Math Curriculum for Summer Learning Program Students

The Grade 7/8 Math Summer Learning Program is welcoming community members into their virtual classroom to speak about the various ways they use math in their daily lives.

Among the guest speakers the grade 7/8 students are learning from are Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie, CHL President Dan Mackenzie, an RBC Financial Advisor, and a local engineer.

Christina De Silva, grade 7/8 math teacher with the SLP, credits the guest speaker idea to a collaboration from educators Rosa Naclerio, Joyce Peloso, Sammie Burke and Brian Munaro who were great team members in making the program successful.

“We were thinking, how could we ensure students are engaged and getting the most out of the summer learning program. What better way to make it authentic with voices from members in our community,” shared De Silva.

Being able to see how math is used in a practical way is valuable for students to make real world connections and further grasp the concepts learned in the classroom.

“Students are able to learn about a profession in our community and ask questions. But also, students are able to see that math is everywhere. We use it in places or professions we have never thought of before,” she said.

Most recently, the classroom enjoyed a visit with Mayor Cam Guthrie.

“Students were thrilled. Many asked questions about the City of Guelph's budget and how the mayor manages to ensure all aspects in Guelph have allocated funds for different things,” shared De Silva. “Students were able to learn that mathematics is an integral part of the mayor's job.”

Next up, students will be visited by a member of the Guelph Police and a local Pilot!
